From June 5 to 8, the Merville Battery Museum presents every evening “They didn’t know it was impossible…”, a sound and light show that pays tribute to the heroes of the D-Day landings.
A fireworks show with an immersive staging
The sound and light show “They didn’t know it was impossible…” takes up the story of the assault on the battery, by the British paratroopers of the 9e Colonel Otway's battalion.
A scenography in the name of memory
The fresco which plays out over the 4 days offers a reconstruction in four scenes. For the 80e anniversary of the Landings, the scenography and technical means evolve with an immersive staging and sound and pyrotechnic performances which take the public to the heart of the conflict.
Costumes, period vehicles, pyrotechnic effects and multi-track spatial surround sound immerse the viewer in the heart of History.
A historical and educational approach
Every evening, nearly 2000 spectators relive each stage of the battery's history. Its construction, its operation, the eventful arrival of Rommel, the development of military planning, the training of British paratroopers and finally, the assault of the battalion. In total, more than a hundred historical curators and volunteer extras pay tribute to the liberating paratroopers.
A show serving mediation and remembrance
80 years after the events, this fresco allows younger generations to experience and understand what happened at the dawn of the longest day.
Labeled “Normandy for peace” by the Normandy Region, the show is in the top 15 of the D-Day Festival Normandy.
